Prepress Technician

Summary:

Prepress technicians set the foundation for successful printing production. They ensure the format, appearance, and layout of text and images are correct prior to submission to offset, large format / small format digital press. Process electronic files and import them into RIP software and impose onto the press sheet, making color, text, and digital image corrections as needed. Produce required proofs and plates based on the output destination. Works closely with external customers and other departments to ensure smooth production flow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determines prepress requirements by thoroughly reviewing job tickets, studying design, content, and specifications
  • Maintains high level of accuracy in daily work
  • Pre-flights supplied files for correctness. Relays all discrepancies between job ticket/quote and supplied files to CSR in written format.
  • Processes or prepares finished files by trapping, editing, keying, and correcting text and graphic elements; prepares files for appropriate output device; operates proofing systems
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting software problems
  • Assists in maintaining prepress file organization on the server and follows all protocols for best practices in file handling
  • Manipulates files for optimal output based on print and/or finishing requirements, and suggests or corrects for best possible imposition; work closely with CSR team to review and implement changes
  • Maintains quality results by following established SOPs and recommending improvements. Is responsible for reviewing and verifying all work before it leaves the department
  • Drafts standard operating procedures and operator work instructions as requested
  • Outputs accurate and correct proofs for the type of work being done

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience within a commercial digital and offset print environment
  • Must have excellent communication skills, including the demonstration of tact, sensitivity, and professionalism
  • Strong proficiency and expert knowledge of all major packages e.g. Quark, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Pitstop etc.
  • Understanding of electronic prepress for, offset, and small and large format digital, electronic workflow experience
  • Must have knowledge of printing terminology and practices
  • Thorough understanding of color management and the G7 methodology
  • Proficient computer literacy in Microsoft Office365, and Internet
  • Must be proficient in using the company’s prepress operating platform and demonstrated ability to learn new technology including new/upgraded software and hardware
  • Must have the ability to write, read and comprehend work instructions
  • Administrative proficiency, outstanding organizational skills and detail orientated imperative
  • Must pass color vision test
  • Must pass color hue test
  • Ability to sit 8 or more hours (sedentary)
  • Ability to use a keyboard and mouse as the job function for extended periods
  • The ability to read, comprehend and interpret job specifications and work instructions
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadline requirements
  • Contribute to a safe working environment and be able to work with others, must be able to follow direction and be self-motivated
  • Must be able to maintain good attendance and willing to work overtime as needed
  • An Associates or higher degree in a graphic design discipline is preferred.
  • All other duties as assigned
