Bindery Guillotine Knife Operator

Primary responsibility consists of producing and processing a quality product in a high-speed production environment on cutting equipment. The ideal candidate will have good knowledge and skills in measuring, folding, binding layouts, imposition, perforating, scoring of various printed and unprinted paper products or substrates. Position reports to the Bindery Manager and Production Supervisor.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must have full knowledge in setup and operation of guillotine knife systems (straight knife), as well as the general maintenance of the equipment and blade changing.
  • Read, understand, and follows work order instructions and pre-established guidelines to determine set up specifications and perform the functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, procedures, and terminology within the bindery field (wrinkles, dog ears, scum, dry up, out off register, guide, off guide, gripper, tail, header, foot, face, spine, signature, and offset).
  • Set up, program cutting functions and dimensions through a computer interface system and operate machine to accurately cut, and register printed and unprinted sheet paper.
  • Measure paper accurately with the use of tools such as a ruler, line gauge, micrometers, and scales.
  • Demonstrate different paper handling skills to aerate, jog and stack paper sheets by hand and with the use of a machine.  
  • Understand and communicate about different paper finishes, basis weights, paper caliper, and their effect on the cutting process and the cutting knives.
  • Enter/record production data into a computer-based MIS System. (EFI PACE)
  • Follow and comply with all company Quality Control procedures and policies to ensure acceptable work.
  • Ability to select, inspect, compare and confirm customer samples.
  • Responsible for training and instructing assigned Bindery Associates during job set up through to completion on a case by case basis.
  • As a team member always assist others when needed or requested.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and leadership from other departments to accomplish the work.
  • May be cross-trained in other areas of the plant and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work well with others and function with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrate safe work habits in a manufacturing environment.

 

Job requirements:

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • 3-4 years of related work experience preferred.
  • Reading, comprehending, and communicating work order instructions verbally and or in writing.
  • Must have essential math skills and read a ruler to 32nds and metric (mm).
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds routinely and operate and control pallet jacks and non-powered material handling equipment (hand trucks, carts, etc.).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move between production devices to load and unload materials.
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting repetitively for extended periods of time.
  • Must be available to work overtime as needed
  • Capable of working in various types of weather and non-climate-controlled environments.
